Through interweaving and juxtaposing the two opposing worlds of dreams and of reality, Tarkovsky orchestrates a disjointed yet poetic narrative, by which he successfully externalised the complicated and contradictory inner world of Ivan, a typical child character who is made for war in reality, but retains his purest naivete of a child’s nature in dreams.
